Alpaca Raising Can Be Profitable

Called "The World's Finest Livestock Investment", alpacas may fit into your financial planning. The cottage spinner weaver with one or two pet alpacas can use the wool to great benefit. The smallholder can raise a herd on land that would not support even a pair of cattle. Alpacas are small, gentle creatures with small appetites. For the professional retiring to the country they may well be the ideal livestock option. There are several tax advantages as well.

The capital expenses of land and buildings is modest compared to other livestock options. As many as six alpacas can graze on a single acre. Barn and shelter can also be of a modest size. When supplemental feeding is required, a small amount of hay is best. It is better for the alpacas than expensive feeds. Alpacas are quite rugged and are disease resistant.

Breeding alpacas is a very satisfying occupation. A female alpaca will normally drop one cria (baby) every year, or about 15 to 20 per lifetime. Every alpaca in the United States is registered with the breeding association. More than just a point of pride, the resulting genetic studies are benefiting all alpaca owners. From a business and tax standpoint you can sell the offspring for income or watch the herd grow as a real growth stock. The wool should more than cover operating expenses. Alpacas from Victory Ranch are prize winners at every alpaca show and can provide top breeding stock.

For wool raising only, geldings require a much smaller capital expenditure. This may be the best choice to provide alpaca wool for a cottage industry.
